How does the foundation work?

We are a community foundation. This means that donors, activists from funded projects and experts from social movements decide together on the funding. The donors thus give their private assets to the collective decision-making processes of a community foundation.

Structure of the Foundation

The donors meet several times a year in the "Advisory Board of Donors", while the representatives of the funded projects and the movement workers meet in the "Assembly of Funded Projects". There they elect their respective representatives to the Foundation Council. Once a year, donors, activists and movement workers come together for a strategy workshop.

The Board of Trustees

The five-member Foundation Board is the central decision-making body of the Foundation. It determines the funding guidelines, selects the campaigns and organisations to be supported and decides on the investment of the foundation's capital. The Foundation Board meets four times a year for deliberations. As a rule, decisions are made by consensus. If this cannot be achieved, decisions are taken by qualified majority (80% of the votes). The Board of Trustees is made up of one representative from each of the donors and the funded projects, as well as three people with special knowledge or experience of or in social movements.

Investment Committee

Bewegungsstiftung has been transferred seven million euros. A lot of money that needs to be invested safely, yield sufficient returns to support projects and at the same time form the capital for political change. Enough reasons to convene an investment committee to discuss and select investment options, which the Foundation Council then decides on. The investment committee consists of donors with personal experience in ethical investment, experts from the ethical investment industry, people with movement experience and the executive director of Bewegungsstiftung.

Office

Bewegungsstiftung is based in Verden (Aller). The offices of the foundation's office, which supports and coordinates the work of the voluntary bodies, are located in the local Ecological Centre. The staff professionally take care of project support, public relations, investment, accounting, event organisation and much more.
